Your chance to enjoy 90 minutes in the company of three of West Ham's fabled Wembley winners.
FED up listening to ex-professional footballers turned TV pundits trying to kid us all how wonderful the English Premier League is today? Sick of all the media hype and greed that permeates through the modern game where self-interest always comes way before any sign of moral decency?
Well, we have the perfect antidote to all this bull**** right here.
A fascinating trio of former West Ham Wembley cup winners took centre stage at the 2011 EX Retro Forum & Fair on Sunday, October 30 to talk all things claret and blue and entertain an appreciative audience.
BRIAN DEAR, who played in the 1965 European Cup Winners' Cup Final against TSV Munich, 1975 FA Cup winner BILLY JENNINGS and 1980 FA Cup hero and West Ham legend ALAN DEVONSHIRE were the special guests at this annual show presented by the publishers of EX - the independent retro magazine.
From the infamous Blackpool nightclub saga to the merits of Ron Greenwood, John Lyall and Sam Allardyce, the Carlos Tevez controversy, their Wembley memories, their toughest opponents and best players they played with, the current manager they rate most highly, footballing principles and ethos, agents and whether West Ham United should stay at the Boleyn Ground or move to the Olympic Stadium . . . all this and much more is covered in this absorbing, no-holds barred debate involving three former Hammers' favourites who recall the highs and lows of their Upton Park careers.
To give you a flavour of what to expect, here are some very brief extracts from the 90-minute show . . .
DEV ON SIGNING FOR WEST HAM FROM NON-LEAGUE SOUTHALL "I got a £250 signing-on fee and it had to be split over a year."
BRIAN ON HIS RECORD FIVE GOALS v WBA "West Ham bought the ball off me for three grand - and it wasn't even pumped up."
BRIAN ON THE BLACKPOOL BUSINESS "We were soundly beaten 4-0 but I never even played in the game. Clyde Best did. We just had a few beers. To save face, the club made an example of Bobby (Moore), which was quite unfair. Far worse things have gone on in that club since. I then went to play for Woodford Town on dog shit corner and got £100 per game."
DEV ON HIS CAREER-THREATENING KNEE INJURY "I smashed my knee up in 1984 and I wasn't the same player afterwards. I had to change my running style and the way I played. It was hard times. Ten to 15 surgeons said I'd never play again."
BILLY ON HIS SERIOUS ACHILLES INJURY "The medical rehab I didn't get in my day. I played again a year later but my calf and thigh muscle were an inch lower. These days, you wouldn't be allowed to play with one leg much shorter than the other. Now my knees are wrecked and I need two new ones."
BRIAN ON HAMMERS' OVERSEAS IMPORTS "Our first foreign player was Billy Bonds from South London."
BILLY ON LEAVING HAMMERS TO JOIN ORIENT "I regretted it a couple of months later."
DEV ON LEAVING HAMMERS FOR WATFORD "It was like playing for a Sunday side after West Ham. The one big regret that will always stay with me is that I never got the chance to say goodbye to the fans when I left. They were great to me and, even though a lot of clubs came in for me, the fans were the reason I never left until I did. I just wish I could've said ‘ta-ta' to them properly."
BRIAN ON TEVEZ AND BEING MADE SUB AT MAN CITY "I wouldn't mind sitting there for a quarter of a million pounds a week."
DEV ON THE ILLS OF MODERN FOOTBALL "In our day, defenders could kick you 10 times before they were even booked. No they are sent off after kicking someone twice. So, to me, dribbling and running past people should be encouraged in modern football, but it's not. All they want to do is pass, pass, pass. I watch a pro game now and it's totally boring. I want to be entertained and see individuality, the things that get people up out of their seats. I don't know what the coaches at pro clubs in this country are doing."
BILLY ON JOHN LYALL "When I came he'd just taken over from Ron Greenwood and he had a little bit of steel in him. He was changing the psyche of some of the lads at the club."
BRIAN ON RON GREENWOOD "He made a lot of players better than they would ever have been. We moaned about him, but we wouldn't have go to where we did without him."
BRIAN ON THE FINANCIAL REWARDS OF WINNING THE ECWC "My mum got more from the loan club that Christmas. I was on 30 pound a week in them days."
BRIAN ON LEGENDS "They talk about legends very cheaply and everyone's a legend nowadays. We didn't have many at West Ham but Alan (Devonshire) definitely is a legend."
Ready to buy the DVD now? We believe it will probably be the best tenner you will spend as a West Ham supporter this year!
